Athletes Foot

What is it?

Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungal infection.

What are the symptoms?

Normally itchiness and this can be anywhere on the foot.  The skin may also crack and flake off.

What causes it?

Funguses thrive in a warm, dark and moist environment.  This is very similar to the environment the foot is exposed to in the shoe.  If you spend lots of time in waterproof boots or doing sport you may be more likely to be predisposed to this condition.

What can you do at home?

Good foot health is key:

  • Dry your feet (remember between the toes)
  • Put athletes foot preparations on your feet
  • If you have excessive moisture between your toes dab surgical spirit as it helps dry the area.
  • Remember it’s easy to resolve but you can be easily re-infected

When to seek help?

If you see no improvements or see any signs of infection make an appointment with the appropriate medical practitioner in your area.

How is it treated?

It is important to have it checked to make sure it is athlete’s foot.  The podiatrist will treat it similarly but will adapt a treatment plan based on your lifestyle.
